Derby Records was established in 1995 by Iowa based singer/songwriter John Watt for the sole purpose of marketing his own musical productions and compositions. As a live musician, Watt came up with the idea of wearing a derby hat as a trademark or stylistic statement. This eventually became the name of his record label.
Ironically, a long-since defunct record company that shared the same name was originally established in New York City. The company eventually moved to Los Angeles where it went out of business the year Watt was born.
